Get certified to hunt safely and responsibly! This Minnesota DNR Hunter Education & Firearms Safety course prepares students to be ethical, safe, and knowledgeable hunters. Instruction focuses on safe firearm handling, basic marksmanship, hunter responsibility, wildlife conservation, outdoor safety, Minnesota hunting laws, and ethical decision-making in the field.
This course is offered in a hybrid format that combines independent online learning with hands-on, in-person instruction.
Course Requirements by Age:
• Ages 11–15 (In-Person Field Day Required): Students may start the course at age 11, and the certification becomes valid on their 12th birthday. Students must complete a MN DNR-approved online course ($29 fee paid directly to the online provider) prior to the in-person session. You must bring your online course completion voucher to the field day.
• Ages 16 & Older (In-Person Field Day Optional): Certification can be completed entirely online (including a virtual field day). The in-person session is optional for this age group but highly recommended for extra hands-on experience.
Important Note for Parents:
A parent or guardian must attend the first 30 minutes of the in-person class to complete required DNR paperwork.
A separate $7.50 Minnesota DNR certification fee is paid online after successfully passing the entire course.
